Sewer Line Cleaning

Clogged sewer drains will trigger serious issues in your home. Food particles, hair, and other substances may cause clogging of your pipes, preventing the dirt and water from passing through.

There may come a time when a bath or shower drains start to drain slowly, or perhaps the homeowner may notice either a constant or intermittent unpleasant odor coming from them. A drain may even back up when a water appliance such as a washing machine or dishwasher is running. Any of the following is a cause for concern for several reasons. A sewage flood in the home can have far-reaching ramifications. Flooding can be bad enough in and of itself that professional intervention will be required to restore the home. Backups can happen even when a homeowner is careful what is put into their drains. Debris or even tree roots can cause the main sewer line to clog. Since it is the homeowner who is responsible for keeping the pipe clear to the city sewer system, it needs to be dealt with by the homeowner rather than city services.

Now what?

A backup will negatively affect the whole household. In most cases, it’s necessary to turn the mainline off to prevent further backups. A plumber is needed to find and resolve a sewer line problem. Meanwhile, water use and cleaning are severely restricted and may come to a grinding halt.

Regardless of the problem, once the plumber arrives, he can assess the situation. He can then give the homeowner a clear understanding of the situation and the options available. Each case is different, due to the type of pipe and the specific cause of the backup. Once the plumber makes a recommendation, the homeowner will have the information needed to decide what the best option will be.

The plumber may recommend the main sewer line be snaked and cleared. First, it’s essential to know what type of pipe is in the line. An exterior access line may be needed. If the home doesn’t have an exterior access point, one may need to be installed.

The next step is to do a camera inspection to see what is happening in the waste line. A camera will show if there are any breaks in the pipe: it’s much easier to deal with a break when it’s small before it gets out of control.

Once the line is examined and cleared, the plumber will let the homeowner know if regular rooting service is needed to prevent a recurrent problem. In some cases, it may be the best option due to tree roots, etc. It may be this is more efficient than tearing up the whole yard to replace the sewer line.

After the pipe is cleared, if the backup wasn’t caused by tree roots, the plumber may have some recommendations for the homeowner regarding things to not put down the drain or plumbing, such as grease, tampons, or flushable wipes. Those suggestions should be followed diligently to avoid plumbing backups in the future.

Signs there May Be a Broken Sewer Line

Many think a broken sewer line is an obvious problem, but some homeowners deal with the after-effects of a busted sewer line for weeks without ever realizing it. Often, plumbers receive calls from customers who think they’ve just got a clogged toilet but, in actuality, are up against a much bigger problem: a broken sewer line.

Here are four signs the sewer line is broken and what to do about it.

  • Sewer backups (i.e., overflowing toilets or drains): Overflowing toilets or drains are tell-tale signs that there is a problem with a sewer line. A backed-up toilet is the most evident and unappealing sign of a sewer line break. Backups usually appear first in the lowest drain at the property since all drains rely on the main sewer line to flush correctly. If a toilet or sink back ups with water once it’s flushed or drained, call a professional plumber immediately.

  • Unmistakable sewage smell: If the sewer line breaks underground or leaks slowly, the drains within the house may not be affected initially. However, if the homeowner suddenly notices a nasty sewage odor inside or around their property, sewer gas is probably leaking out. A well-maintained sewer line is airtight, so one should never smell sewage unless there’s a problem.

  • Odd occurrences in the yard: Are a few patches of grass unexpectedly lush and green? Although homeowners may be tempted to rejoice, there’s a chance it’s being nourished underground through a sewer pipe leak. Likewise, a sewer sinkhole could be forming if the yard has abruptly developed low spots or there are new cracks in the pavers or sidewalks.

  • Super slow drain: Slow drainage from sinks or other home drains can be a tell-tale sign of sewer pipe problems. The sewer pipe may have a very slow leak or be infringed upon by roots or channeling. Avoid the temptation of pouring bottle after bottle of chemical drain cleaner down the drain; the chemicals can eat away the pipes and won’t do any good if the slow-down is caused by a sewer pipe break, anyway.

Homeowners who suspect a sewer problem should contact a professional plumber for help. With their expertise and experience, plumbers can help resolve the matter quickly.
