Understanding Shower Valves and Trim Installation

Since shower valves aren't uniform, picking the right one becomes a puzzle.

Shower valves and trim maintain the shower's functionality but aren't without aesthetic appeal. Various shower valves and trims offer beauty and functionality.

Here are some options and what to know when installing them:

Types of shower valves

Pressure balancing valves regulate water pressure fluctuations to keep the temperature consistent. Meanwhile, thermostatic valves let the user control the temperature more precisely, separate from the water flow. They may not transition between temperatures as smoothly, but they are precise.

There are also diverter and transfer valves. These valves direct the water flow between different shower outputs, particularly useful for older faucets.

Picking a valve

Since shower valves aren't uniform, picking the right one becomes a puzzle. Think about the bathroom's plumbing system and what valve would be compatible with the fixtures. Check whether it's possible to have simultaneous water output. If the fixtures aren't restricted, consider how much water pressure is enough and how precise temperature controls should be.

Shower trims

Shower trim types, unlike valves, vary more in aesthetics than functionality. They can be modern, traditional, or anything in between to match the rest of the bathroom. Shower trims come in kits that include handles, showerheads, and sprouts, each matching the theme. Some trim kits have advanced features like water-saving flow rates and easy-clean nozzles.

Installation

If you have some DIY know-how, installing shower valves and trims alone is not too challenging. Before doing anything else, turn off the water supply. Next, carefully remove the old trim and valve. Follow the manufacturer's instruction manual to install and trim the new valve. Align and seal them enough to be watertight. Some old fixtures may still be reusable, depending on how much has been altered.

Retrofitting a new valve into existing plumbing isn't always possible immediately and might need piping modifications. If this is the case, DIY ceases to be viable, and a professional plumbing service is the best option to get the best results.

Upkeep

Minerals naturally build up in the trim the more it's used, so perform periodic cleaning. Also, check the valves for small leaks or pressure issues that aren't immediately obvious. Over time, washers and seals will wear out, so replace them when necessary. But note that there's no need to replace the whole fixture each time.

Renovate the shower

Shower valves and trims will eventually wear out and need replacement. While it's not a difficult DIY task, that isn't always viable. The good news is that professional plumbers are always available and ready to assist when necessary.
