Spring Plumbing Chores for the Homeowner

Spring is the perfect time to perform regular maintenance and cleaning around your home. While you make a list of spring cleaning chores, make sure to add plumbing to the list. It is essential to check up on your plumbing system to see if everything is in order or if anything needs fixing or replacing for the upcoming season.

Include these plumbing chores to your summer cleaning list to keep your plumbing system functional throughout the year.

Check for leaks

Check all faucets and toilets for leaks. Some of the common places to find leaks are hoses for appliances like dishwashers and washing machines, beneath the sink, and bathtub faucets.

Check your house for signs of water leakage

Damage can be indicated by dampness, corrosion, puddles, rust, and mildew smells. Cool winter temperatures can cause damage to the hose; therefore, it is crucial to check every single hose for cracks or holes. Leakage will not only lead to increased water bills but can also cause severe damage to your home.

Clean gutters and downspouts

Cleaning gutters is one of the most important things to do during the season. The gutters and downspouts get filled with leaves, dirt, twigs, pine needles, and other debris over fall and winter. This can lead to clogs and blockages. Also, check your tub, sink, and toilet drains for blockage. Not cleaning them can lead to flooding and water damage during summer monsoons.

Dishwasher cleaning and garbage disposal

Get your dishwasher and garbage disposal inspected and maintained to make sure they last longer. If you do not have a garbage disposal, you can get one installed in the kitchen to protect the drain from getting clogged.

Sprinklers

Put your sprinkler through a test run to see if there are any issues with the sprinkler heads. Check for cracks and leaks to prevent wastage of water. Don’t forget to set the clock for summer!

Install new fixtures

If your shower heads, faucets, and toilets are outdated or not working correctly, now is the best time to replace them. Upgrading them will improve their performance and increase the visual aesthetics of your home.

Water heater

Check out the water heater at the tank base for leaks or rust. Any signs of these indicate that the water heater needs repair or replacement. In areas with hard water, it is essential to flush the water annually to prevent sediment build-up in the tank that can affect its performance. Adjust the water heater temperature to about 120 degrees to increase its life. You can also install a tankless water heater that supplies hot water on-demand.

Some other tasks to undertake include

  • Clean the dryer lint trap with a small brush and sudsy water. Dry thoroughly before replacing.

  • Put mesh strainers on all drains to prevent hair, soap scum, and other debris from going down the drain.

  • Turn on outside hose bibs to make sure that the water flows properly.

  •  Scrub the toilet tank.

Regular maintenance can keep your plumbing system in good shape. Ignoring these plumbing chores can result in costly repair down the line.
